Nursing Home Workers have a dangerous job

As the attached article points out, working in a Nursing Home or Assisted Living Facility is a job rife with hazards, and with the appearance of the novel coronavirus-these jobs have become even more dangerous.

We you aware that according to a study by the U.S. Department of Labor, healthcare workers (nurses, certified nursing assistants [C.N.A.], therapists, etc.) suffer back injuries 4.5 times more than any other industry?!  Most people assume jobs such as construction workers or steel workers would top this list, but those who work in healthcare, or has a family member in the industry, know.  Nursing home workers deal with individuals who may have great difficulty walking unassisted.  Many of their patients weight a lot and given their mental state, they can be difficult to control at times.  I could not count the number of clients I have represented who injured their back, neck or shoulder (rotator cuff) while trying to assist a resident into the bathroom or trying to prevent them from seriously injuring themselves in a fall.

Nursing Home workers don’t think about themselves in these instances, they act on instinct and do their best to prevent an elderly resident from suffering serious injuries, and as a result they often suffer themselves.  Nursing home workers do a hard (both physically and mentally) job helping others.  The work they do is vital; they help care for our parents and grandparents, and risk injury or infection from COVID-19, all with a smile and little pay. As the article states, they deserve better.
