When Choosing an Alabama Workers’ Compensation Attorney- Experience Counts

Alabama Workers Compensation Attorneys: Experience Counts: If you live in Alabama and have been hurt at work, hopefully you did not suffer a serious work injury, but if you did-or if you just have questions about your rights-it will probably be in your best interest at least speak with an experienced Alabama Workers Comp Lawyer.

The key word is “experienced.” When my car stopped running a few months ago, I knew that I needed to have my car looked at by someone experienced at working on a car like mine. I didn’t want to have someone who just did auto mechanics as a hobby part time, I wanted someone who knew what they were doing. Similarly, if you have been hurt at work, you would want to speak with an attorney whose practice emphasizes workers compensation claims, not a firm which handles a few now and then along with slip and fall, dog bite or class action claims.

At Powell and Denny, workers compensation cases are not just one or a myriad of legal matters we deal with; workers compensation and social security disability cases make up over 90% of our case load.  Both Mr. Powell and Mr. Denny have over 27 years experience handling Alabama Workers’ Compensation cases.  Both Mr. Powell and Mr. Denny have held the positions of Chair of the Alabama Association of Justice’s Workers’ Compensation Division, and of their local Bar Association’s Workers’ Compensation Sections.  Mr. Powell was selected to appear in The Best Lawyers of America for his work as an attorney for injured workers. It is what we do.

No one has to have an attorney to represent them, but I would like to let you know what the Court of Appeals of North Carolina had to say on the subject; “…in contested workers’ compensation cases today, access to competent legal counsel is a virtual necessity.” Church v. Baxter Travenol Laboratories, Inc., 409 S.E.2d 715, 718 (1991).

Additionally, you can’t beat the bargain you get from hiring a lawyer to help you with your Alabama workers’ comp claim as in Alabama, attorneys are limited to a fee of no more than 15% of any settlement or recovery, plus reimbursement of reasonable expenses. Unlike automobile accidents or other torts, workers compensation lawyers in Alabama cannot use a sliding fee scale, and they cannot collect more than 15% plus reasonable case expenses.

Not everyone who calls our offices ends up hiring us to represent them. In certain situations we are able to answer the injured workers’ questions and give some free advice (for instance, we have a book which explains workers compensation cases available for free if you request it). In other cases, the worker realizes that they need help; the choice is yours, but it is smart to at least call a knowledgeable workers’ compensation lawyer with the questions you have.

If you work in North Alabama, you were hurt at work and you have questions about your rights under the Alabama Workers’ Compensation laws, the experienced Alabama Workers Comp Lawyers at would be happy to speak with you about your case.
