Professional Truck Driver Among Most Dangerous Jobs in U.S.

Professional Truck Driver Among Most Dangerous Jobs in U.S.

If you are a truck driver for one of Alabama’s numerous transit companies (Alabama Freight, AMX Trucking, Boyd Brothers, Baggett Transportation, BPI Transportation, Malone Freight, etc.), you already know that you are a professional who performs a job necessary for our Nation; you probably also feel as though you have a bullseye on the back of your truck given all the TV lawyers running ads seeking someone to sue you and your employer.

You know that your job is heavier than the general public believes. We at Powell and Denny have successfully tried cases where the defendant was claiming that an injured truck driver with permanent restrictions could continue their profession because “No Touch” jobs would allow them to do very little lifting-but this is simply not true. Even in jobs that claim to be “No Touch Freight,” you have to be able to slide your tandems, if needed-to raise and lower the trailer jacks (which is really tough if you have jumped the 5th wheel on). In winter weather, you need to be able to put on chains, if you drive across State lines you have to be able to rearrange freight to make sure the weight requirements are correct.  Your Pre Trip and Post Trip inspection can be physical. Being a professional truck driver is a hard job.

What you might not know is that heavy and tractor-trailer drivers experienced the most fatalities among any detailed occupation last year, according to new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, at 831. Truck drivers and driver/sales workers had the most work-related deaths of any broad occupation group, too, at 966.

Truck drivers also topped the list of the most deaths among independent workers in 2018, at 96.

Over the last 27 years, the experienced Alabama Workers Compensation attorneys at Powell and Denny have represented numerous truck drivers who have suffered job injuries. Instead of looking to sue truck drivers, we look to help them obtain the workers’ compensation benefits they are legally entitled to receive.

If you were hurt on the job as a truck driver and you have questions about your workers’ compensation claim, the Alabama Job Injury attorneys at Powell and Denny would be happy to speak with you and try to answer any questions you may have.
