Childhood Schizophrenia

Childhood Schizophrenia

As is my wont, the other morning I was reviewing sites related to our work as Alabama Disability Attorneys, and I came across the attached article which dealt with childhood schizophrenia.  While cases of childhood schizophrenia are rare-they do unfortunately exist, and can be devastating for families.  We have seen it in cases we have handled where a child suffered with this terrible illness.

Schizophrenia is a mental illness which affects how a sufferer experiences reality. Some symptoms include paranoia, auditory or visual hallucinations, disorganized thinking and delusions.  One of the best pieces I have seen which attempts to convey what schizophrenia is like was a terrific piece done by Anderson Cooper (here); if you haven’t seen it, you should, and imagine just how terrifying this medical condition can be for children.

The Social Security Administration lists schizophrenia as a condition which can be disabling when the symptoms seriously interferes with a child’s social functioning, self-care and/or concentration, persistence or pace (see Listing 112.03 Code of Federal Regulations).  Social Security Rules also looks to see if the problems related to childhood schizophrenia causes marked or extreme limitations in one’s ability to: acquire and use information, complete tasks, interact with others, move and manipulate objects, care for oneself and with their ability to care for themselves.

If you have a family member who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia-there is hope, and Social Security Disability benefits may be available to help your family.
