 Can I get disability benefits for trabecular cancer? Trabecular Cancer is a form of Merkel cell carcinoma which is a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer in which malignant cells occur in your hair follicles and just beneath or on your skin.  It usually begins as flesh-colored, blue or red tumors that have the appearance of firm, painless nodules. They usually develop on areas of your body that are most often exposed to the sun, such as your neck, face and head. However, it can also occur on your arms, legs or trunk.

A little over 1,000 new cases of trabecular cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States. Men are affected by this disease about twice as often as women.

Treatment generally includes removal of the tumors as well as radiation and chemotherapy treatments, which can in and of themselves make holding down a full time job a difficult task.

The Code of Federal Regulations lists several conditions and the required symptomology that must be present in order for someone to meet disability standards.  The medical requirements for Sarcoma of the skin is found at Listing 13.03, and meeting the requirements of this listing with sarcoma will also entitle you to disability benefits .  If you do not “meet or equal” this listing, you may still be entitled to disability benefits if your condition, in conjunction with any other physical or mental impairment, prevents you from returning to work you have done in the past and other substantial work you might be qualified to perform given your age, education and acquired work skills.
