Can I get disability benefits for Spinal Arachnoiditis: Spinal Arachnoiditis (also called spinal fibrosis) is a debilitating condition characterized by stinging and burning pain and other neurologic problems. Arachnoiditis is caused by an inflammation of one of the linings which surround the brain and spinal cord. Said inflammation causes a constant irritation and leads to scarring and binding of the nerve roots and surrounding blood vessels.

While the predominant symptom of Spinal Fibrosis is a chronic pain in the lower back and limbs, it can also cause: chronic pain throughout the entire body; numbness and/or weakness of the legs; sensations like insects crawling on the skin, severe shooting pains, muscle cramping and spasms, bladder, bowel and sexual dysfuncxtion.

While the symptoms can be treated, there is no known cure for Spinal Arachnoiditis. Most people with this disease are unable to work on a sustained basis.

The Social Security Administration lists Spinal Arachnoiditis as a condition which can be disabling when the symptoms interferes with the person’s ability to engage in sustained work activity. Listing 1.04B in the Code of Federal Regulations lays out in specifics the impairments which a sufferer has to have in order to qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits for this condition; however, if you do not “meet or equal” this listing, you may still be entitled to disability benefits if your condition, in conjunction with any other physical or mental impairment, prevents you from returning to work you have done in the past and other substantial work you might be qualified to perform given your age, education and acquired work skills.
