Can I get disability benefits for Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Can I get disability benefits for Rheumatoid Arthritis? Rheumatoid arthritis is a form of inflammatory arthritis; inflammatory arthritis effects millions of Americans, with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) alone affecting approximately 2 million people-including me. Ankylosing Spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, lupus, gout and reactive arthritis are other types of inflammatory arthritis.

The symptoms of Inflammatory Arthritis vary according to what type of disease you have, but some common effects are: pain and swelling of the joints, a warmness in the joints, stiffness, decreased range of motion or mobility and becoming sore to the touch. While many who suffer from the various forms of inflammatory arthritis can control their symptoms, many cannot and for them, disability benefits are available.

The Social Security Administration lists rheumatoid arthritis and other forms of inflammatory arthritis as a condition which can be disabling when the symptoms interferes with the person’s ability to engage in sustained work activity. Listing 14.09 in the Code of Federal Regulations lays out in specifics the impairments which a sufferer has to have in order to qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits for this condition; however, if you do not “meet or equal” this listing, you may still be entitled to disability benefits if your condition, in conjunction with any other physical or mental impairment, prevents you from returning to work you have done in the past and other substantial work you might be qualified to perform given your age, education and acquired work skills.

If you or a loved one lives in Alabama or Tennessee, you are suffering from the effects of rheumatoid arthritis or some other form of inflammatory arthritis and you believe you are disabled as the result and are entitled to Social Security Disability or SSI benefits, you do not have to take on the Social Security Administration alone.
