Can I Get Disability Benefits for Myasthenia Gravis

Can I Get Disability Benefits for Myasthenia Gravis? Myasthenia Gravis is an immune system disorder which is characterized by your voluntary muscles becoming weakened and easily fatigued (voluntary muscles are skeletal muscles which used to create movement). A person’s eyes, arms, legs, hands, feet and throat are commonly affected.

There is no cure for myasthenia gravis, but medical treatment can sometimes help relieve the symptoms associated with the disease. Person’s who’s symptoms-despite following prescribed medical treatment (failure to comply with reasonable medical treatment which could return you to work activities can disqualify you from receiving disability benefits)-cause (i) significant difficulty with speaking, swallowing or breathing or (ii) significant motor weakness of muscles of extremities on repetitive activity and (iii) can no longer perform their past relevant work, social security disability benefits may be appropriate.

The Social Security Administration lists myasthenia gravis as a condition which can be disabling when the symptoms interferes with the person’s ability to engage in sustained work activity. Listing 11.12 in the Code of Federal Regulations lays out in specifics the impairments which a sufferer has to have in order to qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits for this condition; however, if you do not “meet or equal” this listing, you may still be entitled to disability benefits if your condition, in conjunction with any other physical or mental impairment, prevents you from returning to work you have done in the past and other substantial work you might be qualified to perform given your age, education and acquired work skills.
