Can I get disability benefits for Muscular Dystrophy: Muscular Dystrophy (MD) refers to a group of more than 30 inherited diseases which cause muscle weakness and muscle loss. The various types of MD vary in what age group is typically affected and in the symptoms caused by the particular form of MD.

All forms of Muscular Dystrophy progressively grow worse over time and eventually, most people who suffer with MD will loose their ability to walk. There is no cure for MD.
Some of the more common symptoms of MD include: mental retardation, muscle weakness, delayed development of motor skills, drooling, eyelid drooping, problems walking or standing and loss of muscle.

The Social Security Administration lists Multiple Dystrophy as a condition which can be disabling when the symptoms interferes with the person’s ability to engage in sustained work activity. Listing 11.13 in the Code of Federal Regulations (Listing 111.13 for children) lays out in specifics the impairments which a sufferer has to have in order to qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits for this condition; however, if you do not “meet or equal” this listing, you may still be entitled to disability benefits if your condition, in conjunction with any other physical or mental impairment, prevents you from returning to work you have done in the past and other substantial work you might be qualified to perform given your age, education and acquired work skills.
