Can I get disability benefits for lupus

Can I get disability benefits for lupus? Lupus (more formerly called Systemic Lupus Erythematosus or SLE) is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks normal, healthy tissue and may result in symptoms such as: inflammation, swelling and damage to one’s joints, skin, kidneys, blood, heart and lungs.  Systemic lupus is a condition which waxes and wanes and generally involves attacks on more than one body system.

Since systemic lupus attacks multiple body systems at the same time, SLE causes a wide range of functional limitations dependent on which body part is being attacked.  With this in mind, the Social Security Administration evaluates the specific functional limitations caused by lupus under a variety of other impairments depending on what body system(s) is affected, such as impairments to ones joints, muscular problems, visual difficulty, respiratory effects, heart problems, digestive, skin, neurological or mental effects.  If one’s lupus is severe enough to meet Social Security’s definition of disabled for a specific effected body part, then the suffer is entitled to Social Security Disability benefits or SSI benefits-see Listing 14.02.

If you do not “meet or equal” this listing, you may still be entitled to disability benefits if your condition, in conjunction with any other physical or mental impairment, prevents you from returning to work you have done in the past and other substantial work you might be qualified to perform given your age, education and acquired work skills.

If you or a loved one lives in Alabama, you are suffering from the effects of lupus and you believe you are disabled as the result and are entitled to Social Security Disability or SSI benefits, you do not have to take on the Social Security Administration alone.  Please feel free to contact and talk with one of the experienced Alabama Disability Attorneys at Powell and Denny today for a free consultation.  Virtual appointments are available via Zoom to better protect you during the coronavirus pandemic.
