Can I Get Disability Benefits for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Can I Get Disability Benefits for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome? Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)- also called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)- is a progressive neurological condition caused by a dysfunction in the central or peripheral nervous system. CRPS, or RSD, is caused by an injury to a nerve usually caused by a trauma but can be caused by surgery. The typical features of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome/Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy include: burning pain, increased skin sensitivity, changes in temperatures of the affected body part (warmer or cooler), skin coloration changes, changes in skin texture (shiny or thin), changes in nail and hair growth patterns in the affected body part, increased sweating of the affected body part, drawing in/clawing of the affected body part and motor disability with decreased ability to move the affected body part, eventually resulting in a condition where a person may totally disabled due to pain.

There are two types of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome/RSD: Type I-without nerve injury and Type II (formerly called causalgia)-with nerve injury. Both types share the same signs and symptoms.

There is no cure for CRPS.

If CRPS/RSD developed as a result of a job injury and your employer regularly employees at least 5 employees, then your initial injury and subsequent development of reflex sympathetic dystrophy/complex regional pain syndrome should be covered by workers’ compensation as any complications which result from an on-the-job injury are supposed to be covered by the workers’ compensation insurance carrier.

Regardless of whether you developed CRPS/RSD as the result of being hurt at work or not, chances are that in the future you will need to apply for Social Security Disability Benefits.
If you have developed Complex Regional Pain Syndrome/Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy and you were denied social security disability or ssi benefits, please do not hesitate to CONTACT the experienced Alabama Disability Lawyers at Powell and Denny today.
