Can I get disability benefits for Colitis? Colitis (also referred to as ulcerative colitis) is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which involves the inflammation of the colon.
Ulcerative colitis usually affects only the innermost lining of your large intestine (colon) and rectum. Like Crohn’s disease, another common IBD, ulcerative colitis can be debilitating and sometimes can lead to life-threatening complications. Unlike Crohn’s, it occurs only through continuous stretches of your colon.
Because ulcerative colitis is a chronic condition, symptoms usually develop over time, rather than suddenly. The disease usually follows a pattern of flare ups followed by periods of remission. As the condition progresses, the symptoms can become more severe and in some cases life threatening.
There’s no known cure for ulcerative colitis.
The Social Security Administration lists colitis as a condition which can be disabling when the symptoms interferes with the persons ability to engage in sustained work activity. Listing 5.06 in the Code of Federal Regulations lays out in specifics the impairments which a sufferer has to have in order to qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits for this irritable bowel disease; however, if you do not “meet or equal” this listing, you may still be entitled to disability benefits if your condition, in conjunction with any other physical or mental impairment, prevents you from returning to work you have done in the past and other substantial work you might be qualified to perform given your age, education and acquired work skills.
If you or a loved one lives in Alabama or Tennessee, you are suffering from the effects of colitis and you believe you are disabled as the result and are entitled to Social Security Disability or SSI benefits, you do not have to take on the Social Security Administration alone.
