Can I get disability benefits for Brittle Diabetes? Generally, it is difficult for person to be approved on a diagnosis of diabetes alone as medical treatment often allows a person to have a healthy and productive life, but this is not the case for those who suffer from brittle diabetes (aka labile diabetes). Brittle diabetes is a term used to describe uncontrolled type 1 diabetes where the sufferer frequently experiences large swings in their blood sugar levels, causing hypoglycemia and/or hyperglycemia.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a condition which persons suffering with labile diabetes are familiar. People with type 1 diabetes do not have enough insulin in their body, which causes the body to break down fat instead of sugar. As the fats are broken down, acids called ketones build up in the blood stream, and this is called ketoacidosis. In high levels, ketones are poisonous and can lead to frequent hospitalizations, and working on a regular, full time basis is extremely difficult to do as the frequent sickness leads to missing too much time from work for most employers.

There is no cure for labile diabetes.

While the Social Security Administration does not have a specific listing covering brittle diabetes, you may still be entitled to disability benefits if your condition, alone or in conjunction with any other physical or mental impairment, prevents you from returning to work you have done in the past and other substantial work you might be qualified to perform given your age, education and acquired work skills.
