Not long ago I had to call the Social Security Administration Help line concerning our password which allows us access to our Social Security Disability clients’ electronic Social Security files. First I had the computer telling me what numbers to hit, and then was hung up on. I called back and was placed on hold for an inordinate amount of time-because the government doesn’t think personal service is important. Unfortunately this happens if you call your bank, call to check on your mortgage payment-almost everything. “Customer Service” is now an oxymoron-as it appears that customers are here to service businesses, not the other way around. This got me thinking, do people go through the same lengthy process to speak with a lawyer with questions about Social Security Disability benefits?

I understand that lawyers cannot just sit in their office waiting for a phone call. The nature of their job necessarily entails being out of the office for court a lot of the time. Talking with an assistant is a good way to keep the attorney updated, but it should not be the primary way you communicate with your lawyer. If the lawyer is too busy to actually meet with you or talk to you on the phone, then how are they going to know enough about YOU to present your case to the court?
