Should I hire a National Disability Firm?

Should I hire a National Disability Firm? It is hard to watch cable television for any length of time without seeing a commercial from some national social security disability law firm. These firms operate out of New York, Massachusetts, Michigan, California and throughout the Nation.

I cannot say anything bad about these firms; I am sure that their attorneys are well versed in Social Security Disability law and they obviously make a lot of money, but common sense does indicate that these firms are not going to pay to send one of their lawyers to Alabama to handle a disability hearing, especially now that it is harder to win disability benefits.

Additionally, when are you supposed to meet with your attorney? If you aren’t working, chances are good that you cannot afford to fly to New York to meet with your attorney, and despite the advances in technology, there is nothing better in helping your lawyer prepare your claim than meeting with them several times before your hearing.

In the past I have received telephone calls from these national firms one month prior to a claimant’s hearing for Social Security disability benefits, asking if I would handle the hearing for them for a share of the attorney fees. The national firm would send us what records they have, we would meet with the claimant and see what additional records need to be obtained and try to see what we could do in such a limited amount of time. Then, there are times (like earlier this month) when I receive an email like what is pasted below (names have been omitted):

Hello Everyone,
My name is XXXX and I am the hearing paralegal for XXX and XXXX. Our sister company, XXXX has upcoming hearings in your area that we need coverage for.
10/16/2019 @ 2:30pm-Lexington, KY-
10/22/2019 @ 11am-Jacksonville, FL-
10/29/2019 @ 12pm-Covington, GA-
11/15/2019 @ 9:30am-Mobile, AL-
12/09/2019 @ 1pm-Alexandria, LA-
12/18/2019 @ 1:30pm-Marietta, GA (VTC)-

If you are available/willing to handle this hearing for our office, please let me know
Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. Have a nice day.

Honestly, it just isn’t worth the time and stress-especially since we would be doing the yeoman’s work on the case and not receiving a full fee for our services, so we no longer take these referrals.

You need to meet with your lawyer and try to get to know them somewhat; not only for the betterment of your claim, but for your own peace of mind.

If you have been denied Social Security Disability benefits, or SSI benefits, and you need help appealing your claim, or if you just have questions about your right to Social Security disability benefits, don’t hesitate to contact and talk to one of the experienced Birmingham Disability Lawyers at Powell and Denny today.
