Questions to Ask before Hiring an Alabama Workers’ Compensation Lawyer

Questions to Ask before Hiring an Alabama Workers’ Compensation Lawyer

If you live or work in Alabama, and you have sustained a workers’ compensation injury, most likely you have a lot of questions.  Do I have a claim?  Can I see my own doctor?  How do I get paid if I am off work due to my injuries?  This is where an experienced Alabama Workers’ Compensation Lawyer can be invaluable, but before taking the step to actually hire an Alabama Workers’ Compensation Attorney, there are several questions you ask any potential lawyer you are considering.  This is the last in our series of seven (7) blogs in which I will go through the questions I believe an injured should ask of a lawyer before actually hiring an attorney.

Question Seven, ask about the lawyer about whether you will be able to talk to them once you have decided to hire their firm.  I am not saying that whenever you call the lawyer’s office you should be guaranteed to speak with them.  I know that I am often out of the office attending hearings, mediating cases or going to trial.  There are also times when a client calls when we are busy working on another case and a message will need to be left with one of our assistants-but your lawyer will get back in touch with you.  This cannot always be said of firms that treat workers compensation cases like a commodity where the less amount of contact the attorney has with the injured worker the better.  In these type of firms, the vast majority of contact the injured worker will have is with a legal assistant and not the attorney who is supposed to representing you.

When we first began practicing law, the internet was just starting to become available to the public and email was not really in use.  Now, pretty much everyone has access to the internet and has an email address, and we really take advantage of using them.  If we are not available, our clients can email us their thoughts and questions and we can respond in like manner when we are unable to talk over the phone.

If you do not have access to actually communicate with the lawyer who is supposed to be representing your interests, how can they know what is going on with you?  Being able to talk with your lawyer is invaluable and if the firm you are thinking of hiring is too busy for the attorney to talk to you, you should probably look elsewhere.
