This is a very good question, and one the Alabama Disability Lawyers at Powell and Denny often are asked.  No, you can not receive Social Security Disability Benefits (SSDI) if you are already receiving Social Security Retirement.  You have to remember that essentially, Social Security Disability benefits are just early retirement benefits for medical reasons.

To qualify for Social Security Disability benefits, you have to have worked for 5 of the last 10 years and paid your Social Security taxes and have a medical condition that prevents you from being able to hold down a full-time job.  In fact, if you are awarded SSDI benefits, once you turn to your retirement age, you check no longer states it is for Social Security Disability, but instead states it is for Social Security Retirement.
