Can I get disability benefits for Parkinson’s: Parkinson’s Disease (also known as Parkinsonian Syndrome or PD) is a progressive condition which effects the sufferer’s central nervous system and primarily affects the persons’ movement.
PD is caused by a shortage of dopamine in the brain; dopamine helps with the coordination of the body’s muscles and the lack of it can lead to a variety of debilitating systems, such as: tremors, stiffness, impaired coordination, slowed motion, pain, memory problems, difficulties with speech and in later stages, even dementia.
If the symptoms of Parkinsons have gotten to the point where it is difficult to maintain steady full time employment (8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year), then you may be entitled to disability benefits.
The Social Security Administration lists Parkinson’s Disease as a condition which can be disabling when the symptoms interferes with the person’s ability to engage in sustained work activity. Listing 11.06 in the Code of Federal Regulations lays out in specifics the impairments which a sufferer has to have in order to qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits for this condition; however, if you do not “meet or equal” this listing, you may still be entitled to disability benefits if your condition, in conjunction with any other physical or mental impairment, prevents you from returning to work you have done in the past and other substantial work you might be qualified to perform given your age, education and acquired work skills.
If you or a loved one lives in Alabama, you are suffering from the effects of Parkinsonian Syndrome and you believe you are disabled as the result and are entitled to Social Security Disability or SSI benefits, you do not have to take on the Social Security Administration alone.
