Can I get disability benefits for Dermatomyositis : Dermatomyositis is an uncommon inflammatory disease which affects the muscles of the body and is often accompanied with chronic inflammation and a distinctive skin rash. The condition affects adults and children. With adults, the disease usually occurs from the late 40s to the early 60s; with children the condition generally appears between the age of 5 – 15.
Generally, the symptoms of Dermatomyositis include: a violet colored or rust colored rash (most commonly on the face and eyelids, or around your nails, elbows, knees, chest or back) and progressive muscle weakness. Other symptoms include difficulty swallowing, fatigue, weight loss, gastrointestinal ulcers and lung problems.
Periods of remission may spontaneously occur, but there is no cure.
While some people with this disease go on to live perfectly normal lives, others struggle with the symptoms and may suffer with a serious disability.
The Social Security Administration lists dermatomyositis as a condition which can be disabling when the symptoms interferes with the person’s ability to engage in sustained work activity. Listing 14.05 in the Code of Federal Regulations lays out in specifics the impairments which a sufferer has to have in order to qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits for this condition; however, if you do not “meet or equal” this listing, you may still be entitled to disability benefits if your condition, in conjunction with any other physical or mental impairment, prevents you from returning to work you have done in the past and other substantial work you might be qualified to perform given your age, education and acquired work skills.
If you or a loved one lives in Alabama, you are suffering from the effects of dermatomyositis and you believe you are disabled as the result and are entitled to Social Security Disability or SSI benefits, you do not have to take on the Social Security Administration alone.
