Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) is a medical condition characterized by episodes of severe vomiting that have no apparent cause, often associated with nausea, gagging, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and headaches. Associated symptoms such as weight loss, dehydration, tooth decay and esophagitis are not uncommon.  These episodes can last for hours or even days, and often have a similar pattern (time of day, how long it lasts, intensity), although this is not always the case.

CVS is difficult to diagnose as vomiting is a symptom in a lot of medical disorders, and Cyclic Vomiting is generally diagnosed by ruling out other potential causes.  Although Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome can affect person of all ages-the condition often begins during childhood.

Given the unique nature of CVS, a medical history of treatment-preferably with a gastroenterologist-is needed in order for a diagnosis of the condition.
