Can I Get Disability Benefits for Congestive Heart Failure

Can I get disability benefits for Congestive Heart Failure: Congestive Heart Failure (also referred to Chronic Heart Failure) is a disease characterized by the inability of the heart to pump enough blood to effectively meet the needs of the body, or can only do so under increasing strain and pressure on the heart; consequently, the blood is not able to move easily through the circulatory system. The heart’s ability to pump blood may be impaired by a variety of causes such as a heart attack or poorly controlled high blood pressure. The failure of the ventricles to pump blood efficiently results in blood accumulating in the heart, and enlargement of the ventricles. A person often will not have any chest pain associated with this condition.

One who suffers from Congestive Heart Failure may suffers from side effects such as: fatigue, shortness of breath, swollen feet, legs, ankles and/or marked limitations on their ability to perform physical activities.

According to the American Heart Association, 5.3 million Americans suffer from heart failure, with 660,000 new cases diagnosed yearly. Nationally, treatment for Chronic Heart Failure exceeds 30 billion annually.

The Social Security Administration lists recurrent congestive heart failure as a condition which can be disabling when the symptoms interferes with the person’s ability to engage in sustained work activity. Listing 4.02 in the Code of Federal Regulations lays out in specifics the impairments which a sufferer has to have in order to qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits for this condition; however, if you do not “meet or equal” this listing, you may still be entitled to disability benefits if your condition, in conjunction with any other physical or mental impairment, prevents you from returning to work you have done in the past and other substantial work you might be qualified to perform given your age, education and acquired work skills.

If you or a loved one lives in Alabama, you are suffering with Chronic Heart Failure and you believe you are disabled as the result and are entitled to Social Security Disability or SSI benefits, you do not have to take on the Social Security Administration alone.
