Can I get disability benefits for Cerebral Palsy

Can I get disability benefits for Cerebral Palsy: Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a condition which effects a person’s ability to control their body movement and adversely effects their muscle tone. CP is caused by injury or abnormal development in an immature brain, most commonly occurring before birth.

Some persons diagnosed as having CP may have virtually no obvious impairment, while others may be permanently disabled.

Symptoms of Cerebral Palsy appear during infancy or the pre-school years; the most common symptoms of CP are: lack of muscle coordination, dragging of one foot when ambulating, exaggerated reflexes; rigid limbs, unsteadiness while walking and involuntary muscle movements. Those who suffer with CP may also have certain intellectual disabilities, vision and/or hearing problems or with seizures.

The Social Security Administration lists Cerebral Palsy as a condition which can be disabling when the symptoms interferes with the person’s ability to engage in sustained work activity. Listing 11.07 in the Code of Federal Regulations (Listing 111.07 for children) lays out in specifics the impairments which a sufferer has to have in order to qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits for this condition; however, if you do not “meet or equal” this listing, you may still be entitled to disability benefits if your condition, in conjunction with any other physical or mental impairment, prevents you from returning to work you have done in the past and other substantial work you might be qualified to perform given your age, education and acquired work skills.

If you or a loved one lives in Alabama or Tennessee, you are suffering from the effects of Cerebral Palsy and you believe you are disabled as the result and are entitled to Social Security Disability or SSI benefits, you do not have to take on the Social Security Administration alone.
