What is Social Security Disability

What is Social Security Disability

In 1935, the Social Security Act was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1937.  Most Americans are knowledgeable about Social Security because of the retirement benefits it provides working Americans, but many are not aware that in 1954 President Eisenhower signed into law amendments to the Social Security Act, providing benefits for disabled Americans.

These amendments provide a “safety net” for Americans who become disabled (for at least 12 months) and are unable to work.  Were you aware that according to the Social Security Administration, 1 in 4 20-year olds will become disabled before they reach age 67?  This is a daunting figure, especially when you learn that 67% of private sector employees have no long-term disability insurance coverage.  Without Social Security Disability, millions of Americans would be without any source of income or means to seek medical treatment.  To say that Social Security is a National Security issue is not hyperbole.

Two different types of disability benefits are available to those who are unable to work, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).  For information on the difference between the two programs, go to the blog we have previously posted.

If you believe that you are disabled and entitled to disability benefits, don’t hesitate to contact and speak with one of the experienced Alabama+ Disability Attorneys at Powell and Denny today for a free consultation.  Virtual appointments are available through Zoom, so you can meet with one of our experienced Alabama Disability Attorneys from the comfort and convenience of your home.
