Can I Get Disability Benefits for Atrial Fibrilation

Can I Get Disability Benefits for Atrial Fibrilation

Can I get disability benefits for Atrial Fibrillation? Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common type of arrhythmia (irregular heart beat). A Fib occurs when rapid and disorganized electrical signals cause the heart’s upper two chambers (called the atria) to contract very fast and irregularly, causing blood to pool in the heart’s lower two chambers, which leads to the heart’s chambers not working together as intended.

Many people who have AF do not experience any symptoms; but this can be dangerous as treatment is not sought and stroke or heart failure can be the result

Medication is the most common type of treatment for Atrial Fibrillation, but if that does not correct the problem, a pace maker may be needed to facilitate the proper functioning of your heart.
Symptoms of AF include: irregular heartbeats, fainting, chest pain and as stated, can lead to stroke or heart failure.

The Social Security Administration lists recurrent arrhythmias as a condition which can be disabling when the symptoms interferes with the person’s ability to engage in sustained work activity. Listing 4.05 in the Code of Federal Regulations lays out in specifics the impairments which a sufferer has to have in order to qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits for this condition; however, if you do not “meet or equal” this listing, you may still be entitled to disability benefits if your condition, in conjunction with any other physical or mental impairment, prevents you from returning to work you have done in the past and other substantial work you might be qualified to perform given your age, education and acquired work skills.

If you or a loved one lives in Alabama, you are suffering with atrial fibrillation and you believe you are disabled as the result and are entitled to Social Security Disability or SSI benefits, you do not have to take on the Social Security Administration alone.
