Bipolar Disorder and Social Security Disability Claims in Alabama
Bipolar disorder—sometimes referred to as manic depression—is a serious mental health condition that can significantly interfere with a person’s ability to maintain full-time employment. The disorder is characterized by extreme mood swings, including episodes of major depression and periods of mania or hypomania. These fluctuations are not simply changes in mood; they can profoundly affect judgment, energy level, concentration, behavior, and interpersonal functioning.
During depressive episodes, individuals may struggle with overwhelming fatigue, lack of motivation, difficulty concentrating, disrupted sleep, and feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness. At the other extreme, manic episodes may involve racing thoughts, impulsive decision-making, reduced need for sleep, irritability, and an inability to stay focused on tasks. While some individuals initially resist treatment because manic episodes can feel energizing or productive, those same periods often lead to poor judgment, strained relationships, and behavior that is incompatible with a structured work environment.
Maintaining competitive employment requires consistency—reliable attendance, sustained concentration, appropriate interaction with others, and the ability to handle ordinary workplace stress. Bipolar disorder can disrupt all of these areas. If symptoms make it difficult to function within family relationships, it is often even more challenging to meet the demands of an eight-hour workday, five days a week, on a continuing basis.
The Social Security Administration recognizes bipolar disorder as a potentially disabling condition. Claims are evaluated under Listing 12.04 (Depressive, Bipolar, and Related Disorders). To meet this listing, medical evidence must show a history of manic and depressive episodes that result in marked limitations in areas such as daily activities, social functioning, or concentration, persistence, or pace, or that involve repeated episodes of decompensation.
Even if a claimant does not strictly meet the listing criteria, Social Security may still find the individual disabled if bipolar disorder—alone or in combination with other physical or mental impairments—prevents the person from performing past work or any other substantial gainful activity on a regular and continuing basis.
As with all mental health disability claims, medical documentation is critical. Bipolar disorder must be diagnosed by a qualified medical professional, and treatment records play an essential role in demonstrating the severity, frequency, and functional impact of symptoms over time.
