Social Security Disability Benefits  Common Mistakes in Applying for Benefits IV

Social Security Disability Benefits  Common Mistakes in Applying for Benefits IV

Every day people throughout Alabama and Tennessee file for Social Security Disability (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, and over 70% of these applications will be summarily denied.  If you have been denied disability benefits, it really is in your best interest to hire an experienced Social Security Disability Lawyer to help you with your appeal, but in this blog I wanted to write about things you can do during your initial application that might help you get awarded Social Security Disability benefits without having to go through an appeal.  This is the forth blog in this series, and it picks up where we left off in the third blog.

4) Ask if your doctor will help you in your claim for Social Security Disability Benefits: We ended the last blog discussing how you should talk with your treating physicians about the fact you think you might need to apply for Social Security Disability benefits.  They are going to be contacted by the Social Security Administration if you file anyway, so it is better to let them know what you are thinking about.  Not only will this give them a head’s up when Social Security contacts them, but it provides them with an opportunity to discuss the problems you are having in more detail, which should end up in your medical file-which could help your claim

If your doctor seems to support your thought that you are entitled to Social Security Disability benefits, then you should ask if they are willing to write a letter for you stating that currently you are not capable of maintaining steady employment.  You could also ask if they would complete paperwork that shows what your physical and/or mental impairments are, and this would be very strong evidence in your claim for disability benefits.

I know that quite often doctors don’t want to get involved in a patient’s claim for disability, but many times a doctor will be sympathetic to their patient’s problems and concerns and willing to help.  The only way you will know is to ask.

In our next-and last- blog on common mistakes people make when applying for Social Security Disability benefits we will discuss your responsibility to cooperate with the Social Security Administration during the application process.
