Social Security Disability Benefits  Common Mistakes in Applying for Benefits II

Social Security Disability Benefits  Common Mistakes in Applying for Benefits II

Everyday people throughout Alabama and Tennessee file for Social Security Disability (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, and over 70% of these applications will be summarily denied.  If you have been denied disability benefits, it really is in your best interest to hire an experienced Social Security Disability Lawyer to help you with your appeal, but in this blog I wanted to write about things you can do during your initial application that might help you get awarded Social Security Disability benefits without having to go through an appeal.  This is the second blog in this series, and it picks up where we left off in the first blog.

2) Tell you doctors about all of your medical problems: We ended the last blog discussing how many of our clients don’t mention problems they are having with depression and anxiety which are related to their other medical problems which prevent them from being able to hold a full time job, but realistically-if your medical problems are such that you can no longer work and help provide for yourself and your family, it would be strange if you did not struggle with depression and anxiety.  All too often depression and anxiety or not mentioned to a person’s treating physicians, and if your doctor does not know about your struggles, they cannot do anything to help you deal with these issues.  Additionally, if they do not know what you are dealing with, they will not put anything in your medical records reflecting the problems, and if it is not in your medical records, the Social Security Administration will assume that you are not dealing with any significant depression or anxiety.

I have had clients who neglected to mention things such as numbness or tingling in their extremities, nausea or other side effects of their medication, restless leg syndrome or any number of other medical problems they are dealing with-thinking that all they really needed to concentrate on was their “main” medical problems.  This is a mistake.  First, you have to let your doctors know about all the problems you are having, are a correct diagnosis will be difficult to make.  Secondly, if the problems are not documented, they do not exist in Social Security’s mind.

In our next blog on common mistakes people make when applying for Social Security Disability benefits we will discuss talking to your doctors about your plans to apply for disability benefits.
