Am I eligible for SSI benefits?
Am I eligible for SSI benefits? Chances are, if you are applying for Social Security Disability benefits, you will be asked if you are applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI); these are disability benefits available-for children, or for disabled persons who have not worked long enough in the last 15 years to qualify for SSDI benefits, with limited resources.
To be eligible for SSI benefits-in a disability context-you must clear two hurdles. First, you must first show that you meet the legal definition of being disabled. Secondly, you must not have more than $2,000.00 ($3,000.00 for a married couple) in assets. Assets include any income you are receiving, investment income, real estate, other Social Security benefits you may be receiving and the value of such things as food and shelter others may be providing you.
The reason for the asset limitation is because Supplemental Security Insurance benefits is a “needs based” program. It is a social safety net for persons incapable of substantial gainful employment who do not qualify for SSDI benefits. You may be found to be disabled, but still unable to draw SSI benefits if you have too much in assets.
