Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) is a serious medical condition which can, and often does, prevent a person from holding down a full-time job. Person’s suffering from bipolar disorder experience severe mood swings; from periods of crushing depression in which getting out of bed can seem an excruciating task, to times in which the person experiences manic highs in which nothing seems impossible and the person jumps from one excited idea to another without ever finishing a task. The Social Security Administration considers bipolar disorder a disabling condition when the person has a history of periods characterized with both manic and depressive symptoms which causes at least two of the following: (i) marked restrictions in activities of daily living; (ii) marked difficulties in maintaining social functioning; (iii) marked difficulties in maintaining concentration, persistence, or pace or (iv) results in repeated episodes of decompensation of extended duration.
