Traumatic Brain Injury
Regardless of how dismissive the President appeared to be recently when discussing Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) suffered by American Troops in Iraq, “traumatic brain injuries are more than simple headaches, post-traumatic stress disorder has nothing to do with a person’s inner fortitude, and trauma doesn’t turn former soldiers into killers. Yet because others share Trump’s beliefs, those with invisible and mental disabilities face regular scrutiny and skepticism, whether they’re parking in a handicapped spot or asking for accommodations.”
A traumatic brain injury is caused by a blow to the head, or a jolt, which disrupts the normal functioning of the brain and can range from a mild change in mental status to severe injuries which total disable the sufferer. Traumatic brain injuries account for nearly a third of all injury related deaths in the United States and the direct medical and other indirect costs of TBI totaled an estimated $60 Billion dollars in 2000.
While the majority of TBI injuries fall in the “mild” category, at first it can be difficult to know if a head injury is minor, has caused a concussion or has caused more far ranging and devastating symptoms. With this in mind, if you have suffered a blow to the head, you should immediately report the incident as it is difficult to know at first how severe the injury may be in the long term.
