Alabama Automobile Accident Attorney Use Your Turn Signal

Alabama Automobile Accident Attorney Use Your Turn Signal! With Alabama having the 7th highest number of traffic fatalities from 2003-2012, we all should practice defensive driving while operating an automobile on Alabama highways and interstates.

In doing some research on some of the most common causes of car wrecks, I came upon some studies which surprised me; but one, conducted by the Society of Automotive Engineers, was shocking. According to this 2012 report, more automobile accidents are caused by drivers failing to use their turn signals (or hand signals), and leads to more than TWICE as many wrecks as distracted driving (e.g. using a cell phone, messing with the radio, eating, personal grooming). This report found that nearly 2 million automobile accidents happened each year in America due to a driver's failure to use their turn signal properly.

Approximately 48% of drivers fail to use their turn signal when changing lanes-or fail to ensure that they are off after use. 25% of drivers neglect to use their turn signal when turning onto a side road or into a parking lot.

Using your turning signal is not just a nicety, it is the law in Alabama. Ala.Code §32-5A-133 reads as follows:

•(a) No person shall turn a vehicle or more right or left upon a roadway unless and until such movement can be made with reasonable safety nor without giving an appropriate signal in the manner hereinafter provided.

•(b) A signal of intention to turn right or left when required shall be given continuously during not less than the last 100 feet traveled by the vehicle before turning.

•(c) No person shall stop or suddenly decrease the speed of a vehicle without first giving an appropriate signal in the manner provided herein to the driver of any vehicle immediately to the rear when there is opportunity to give such signal.

•(d) The signals provided for in Section 32-5A-124(b) shall not be flashed on one side only on a disabled vehicle, flashed as a courtesy of "do pass" signal to operators of other vehicles approaching from the rear, nor be flashed on one side only of a parked vehicle except as may be necessary for compliance with this section.

Failure to appropriate use your turning signal directly leads to wrecks, as the drivers behind you have no advance knowledge that you will soon be decreasing your speed.
