Alabama Automobile Accident Attorney Tailgating

Alabama Automobile Accident Attorney Tailgating: With Alabama having the 7th highest number of traffic fatalities from 2003-2012, we all should practice defensive driving while operating an automobile on Alabama highways and interstates, but unfortunately, it is all too easy to slide into bad habits, and one of the worst (and most dangerous) habits is tailgating.

Tailgating is when a driver follows the car in front too closely, literally riding on its tail. Doing so lessens the time a driver has to react, greatly increasing one's chances of being involved in an car wreck.

No one likes being tailgated; it can make you nervous and it can make you angry, yet I would hazard to guess that the vast majority of us have done this at some time in the past.

One big mistake many drivers make is tailgating the vehicle in front of them. According to a study by the Alabama Department of Transportation, 13.6% of all traffic accidents involving big trucks were caused by tailgating. Over 17,000 automobile accidents occurred in 2011 because of tailgating, and two lives were lost.

You have probably heard of the "3-second rule." This is the guide for maintaining a safe driving distance between you and the car in front of you. Pick a site off the road and mark the time it takes you to pass said site after the vehicle in front of you passed it. If you are 3-seconds behind them, you are most likely traveling at a safe distance (although this time should increase with adverse weather conditions like rain, fog, windy conditions or ice).

If you are driving at 55 m.p.h., you will travel 37 feet in a second, which equates to 111 feet in 3 seconds. It takes time to react to what is happening in front of you, so please be sure to keep a safe distance between you and the vehicles in front of you. And if you are being tailgated, please resist the urge to "tap" your brakes; this jab at the other driver could have serious consequences.

If you or a family member has been involved in an automobile accident and you have any questions about your rights in Alabama, don't hesitate to contact and talk with one of the experienced Alabama Automobile Accident Lawyers at Powell and Denny.
