Alabama Automobile Accident Lawyer Weather Conditions

Alabama Automobile Accident Lawyer Weather Conditions: According to the Alabama Department of Transportation, there were 127,683 automobile accidents in 2011; 899 of these wrecks lead to a fatality. What really surprised me though was the fact that 100,259 of these car wrecks occurred on a dry road; 86,020 occurred on a clear day.

I really thought a larger percentage of crashes would have occurred in wet or snowy conditions, but only 21,431 (slightly under 17% of all car accidents in Alabama) occurred in wet or slushy conditions. This is lower than the national average of 23% of all wrecks being defined as weather related crashes (accidents which occur on wet/slushy/icy pavement).

Everyone has to remember that just because the speed limit is 70 mph, it doesn't mean it is safe to drive at this speed, especially in adverse weather conditions. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, a light rain on the interstate can reduce the average speed from 3-13%. Heavy rain can cut speeds on the freeway by up to 16%. This means that if it is raining, the average speed on the roadway which normally has a speed limit of 70 m.p.h. would be 59 mph, making driving at the actual speed limit dangerous. In snowy conditions, speeds can drop by 40%. Because of this fact, in Alabama, you can be ticket for driving at an unsafe speed given the driving conditions regardless of the posted speed limit.

Driving takes concentration, and common sense. If it is raining, snowing, cold enough for black ice to form or foggy, slow down.
