Alabama Automobile Accident Lawyer Traffic Fatalities

Alabama Automobile Accident Lawyer Traffic Fatalities: A week or two ago a report was issued showing that Alabama had the 7th highest number of traffic fatalities from 2003-2012. Alabama's automobile accident fatality rate was nearly double the national average. So, how safe is it to drive in Alabama?

Overall, your chances of being involved in an automobile accident in Alabama are less than in most States. In 2010, there were an estimated 5,419,000 crashes in the United States; 127,683 occurred in Alabama. That means only approximately 2.3% of all car wrecks in America occur in Alabama. Moreover, Alabamians are reported to wear their seat belts in a greater percentage than the national average of drivers. Why then are our death rates so much higher?

One of the main reasons for Alabama's higher than statistically expected number of car wreck fatalities is because of the number of accidents which occur in rural areas.

95.64 percent of the land area of Alabama has rural status, but only 41% of our citizens live in rural areas. The problem is that rural counties in Alabama lack many health care services readily available in more urban areas. Eight counties in Alabama do not even have a hospital. This means increased time before needed medical care can be provided those injured in automobile accidents, which can lead to more serious permanent injuries and death.

Of the 127,683 car wrecks which occurred in Alabama 2011; 814 of these crashes involved a fatality. That means that less than 1% of automobile accidents result in a death in Alabama, but this is still too many lives lost as most accidents are preventable.

NEVER drink and drive. If you are tired, pull over and rest. If it is dark, raining or snowing, slow down. Just because the speed limit is 60 mph does not mean that it is safe to drive at this speed. PUT DOWN YOUR CELL PHONE. Slow down for curves. Don't be an aggressive driver, regardless of what some other driver is doing.

If you or a family member has been involved in an automobile accident and you have any questions about your rights in Alabama, don't hesitate to contact and talk with one of the experienced Alabama Automobile Accident Lawyers at Powell and Denny.
