Can I Get Disability Benefits for a Panic Disorder

Can I Get Disability Benefits for a Panic Disorder? Panic Disorder: People who suffer from a Panic Disorders have sudden and repeated attacks of severe fear that lasts for several minutes or longer and can be terrifying to the individual suffering the attack. These episodes are called panic attacks. Many people express the belief that they are dying or going insane during these attack periods, even when there is no real danger. An attack may also feel like a heart attack.

Panic attacks can happen at any time, and those who suffer with panic attacks constantly worry about when the next attack will occur. This obviously can seriously interfere with a person's ability to engage in full time work activity in a sustained capacity.

The Social Security Administration recognizes panic disorder as an anxiety disorder which can be disabling when the symptoms interferes with the person's ability to engage in sustained work activity. Listing 12.06 in the Code of Federal Regulations lays out in specifics the impairments which a sufferer has to have in order to qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits for this condition; however, if you do not "meet or equal" this listing, you may still be entitled to disability benefits if your condition, in conjunction with any other physical or mental impairment, prevents you from returning to work you have done in the past and other substantial work you might be qualified to perform given your age, education and acquired work skills.
