Alabama Workers' Compensation Attorney What is a Physiatrist

Alabama Workers' Compensation Attorney What is a Physiatrist

Alabama Workers' Compensation Attorney What is a Physiatrist? You were hurt on the job, reported said injury, passed the drug screen and complied with everything your treating doctor/surgeon asked you to do, but you still suffer with pain. You tell your authorized treating physician that you are still hurting, and they tell you that there is nothing more they can do for you, but that maybe a physiatrist can help. If you are like most injured workers, you next question is "what is a physiatrist."

I said physiatrist, not psychiatrist. A psychiatrist helps people with depression and mental disorders. A physiatrist is a doctor (maybe a medical doctor-M.D, maybe a doctor of osteopathic medicine-D.O.) who is certified as a specialist in rehabilitation medicine by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

A physiatrist tries to help you with your continued pain and discomfort once your surgeon has released you from their care (you have to remember that a surgeon's job is to perform surgery; if further surgery will not help your condition, they are not suited to treat your permanent problems). Many times a physiatrist is referred to as a "pain doctor" because pain is one of the primary problems they address in workers' compensation cases.

Physiatrist can really help you in your quality of life; having stated this, a physiatrist cannot perform surgery, and unless you are looking for a new pain doctor, a physiatrist should not be listed as a choice in a Panel of Four (for more information on what a Panel of Four is, please type "Panel of Four" in our blog query).

If you were hurt at work and you have questions about your right to Alabama Workers Compensation benefits, please do not hesitate to call and talk with one of the experienced Alabama Workers Compensation Attorneys at Powell and Denny today.
