Alabama Social Security Disability: How Long

Alabama Social Security Disability Attorney: How long does it take? Over the last 22 years of handling Social Security Disability claims in Alabama, I have heard this question a lot. It is true that applying for and being awarded Social Security Disability benefits and/or SSI benefits is a long process. There are several reasons for the lengthy delay.

First, the Social Security Administration simply does not have the personnel to move their case load in as timely a fashion as they would like to. The Social Security Administration has asked Congress for the means to hire more Administrative Law Judges and assistants to work on the cases, but Congress isn't really doing much these days besides fighting

Another reason for the delay is the increased number of filings. As the baby-boomer get older, the number of application for disability benefits increases.

In Alabama, the average time from when you initially apply for disability benefits to when you actually have a hearing on your case is 474 days. The national average is around 440 days, so Alabama is not far from the national average. In Nebraska, the average wait is 630 days.

Moreover, a delay is not always bad for your case. It allows you to continue seeking and receiving medical treatment, and these medical records can be used as evidence to support your claim for disability benefits.

If you believe that you qualify for Social Security Disability benefits or SSI benefits, my advice is to obtain the services of an experienced Social Security Disability attorney who can help you wade through the confusing paperwork and use this time to help prepare the best case possible and argue on your behalf before an Administrative Law Judge.

If you live in Alabama and believe that you are entitled to disability benefits, don't hesitate to contact and talk to one of the experienced Alabama Social Security Disability attorneys at Powell and Denny. We are happy to speak with you for free and try to answer any questions you may have.
