Alabama Disability Attorneys HUNTSVILLE Alcohol and Drug Abuse

Alabama Disability Attorneys HUNTSVILLE Alcohol and Drug Abuse

Alabama Disability Attorneys HUNTSVILLE Alcohol and Drug Abuse: When I first started practicing Social Security Disability law in the early 90's, it was possible to obtain Social Security disability benefits and/or SSI benefits for alcoholism and being addicted to drugs. I remember being stunned to learn this, but it was not long afterwards that Congress amended the rules regarding disability benefits and made it so that one could no longer be awarded disability benefits solely because they were addicted to alcohol or drugs.

So currently, you may not receive Social Security Disability benefits (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) because of your addictions, but this does not mean that you cannot received disability benefits for the medical problems associated with past abuse. For example, cirrhosis is a terrible medical condition which can be disabling. If you have a serious case of cirrhosis-the fact years of abuse of alcohol caused the condition is immaterial. Additionally, if you are still struggling with addiction, but are also suffering from a medical condition which is disabling in and of itself-the fact you are struggling with addiction would not prevent you from receiving disability benefits. However, if you are suffering from a medical problem whose symptoms could be made less severe if you were to quit abusing alcohol or drugs, then you would not be entitled to disability benefits.

If you are struggling with alcohol or drug abuse, please seek treatment before it is too late. If you had problems in the past with abuse and now are suffering from the consequences of your actions, help is still possible as you may be entitled to disability benefits.

If you have been denied Social Security Disability benefits in Huntsville Alabama, or anywhere in Madison County* but you believe that you meet the legal definition of disabled, or if you just have questions about your application, don't hesitate to call an experienced Alabama Disability Attorney at Powell and Denny today.
